My Book of Music Maps

First graders at Whittier Elementary collected their music maps in a booklet called, "My Book of Music Maps." (Three-Four 11x17 pieces of construction paper folded in half and stapled). After a song was learned, each student gathered two sheets of 11x17 pieces of newsprint, a marker, and his or her booklet. Each found a place to study and make at least four maps of the song on the newsprint and one in the booklet. At the end of the period, they took their newsprint maps with them to share with their classroom teacher or parents, the booklet stayed in the music room ready to add new maps on another day. Throughout the year, when the students returned to their booklets, they automatically revisited all the maps and songs and shared them with friends.
